Among the series of events during the European Development Days, Brussels hosted as well the Third World Reconstruction Conference, which was opened by EU Commissioner Christos Stylianides and the World Bank VP Cyril Muller. This vibrant event attracted heads of states and premiers, experts on resilient recovery, international organisations, NGOs, academia, banks and the private sector from around the globe. The forum gave excellent opportunity from sharing best practices and learning more for post-crisis and post-disaster recovery.
Abuye Aneley is chief advisor to the Ethiopian minister of urban development, housing and construction. The fast rate of urbanisation in the country urges the ministry to focus on the issues of how urban expansion and migration impact disaster management and prevention, as they have to look at how to mitigate challenges like floods and waste within the overall recovery management process. Now a huge housing programme is under way in the country and Abuye Aneley searches for more data on eurocodes, a set of safety and security standards for the design of buildings and other civil engineering works. At the stand of the JRC, the science and knowledge service of the Commission, Silvia Dimova and Maria Luisa Sousa are giving him detailed information on eurocodes.
