New US sanctions put pressure on Iran
22 July, 2017
The US imposed new economic sanctions against Iran last Tuesday while at the same time warned Tehran that it would face consequences for breaching "the spirit" of the nuclear deal with world powers. The US government said it was targeting 18 entities and people for supporting what is said were "illicit Iranian actors or transnational criminal activity." Those sanctioned had backed Iran's military or Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps by developing drones and military equipment, producing and maintaining boats, and procuring electronic components, it said. Others had "orchestrated the theft of US and Western software programs" sold to Iran's government, according to the Treasury Department.
In response, the leader of Iran's Revolutionary Guard Mohammad Ali Jafari warned the US to move its military bases from within 1,000km of the country. Speaking at a weekly cabinet meeting, President Hassan Rouhani (pictured) said Iran will promptly respond to the new sanctions with reciprocal measures.
