Competition for Palme d'Or kicks off
19 May, 2017
Actress Lily-Rose Depp and director Asghar Farhadi opened the 70th Cannes Film Festival, the world’s biggest cinema gathering, on 17 May, AFP reported. In the company of the 17-year-old daughter of French singer Vanessa Paradis and American actor Johnny Depp, the Iranian filmmaker wished the festival’s participants “…twelve days full of enthusiasm. Twelve days to discover films that make you think about the human condition today.”
Spanish director Pedro Almodovar, head of the jury, expressed his hope that the 19 films selected to the competition programme will empower and inspire.
“I promise to be subjective, passionate and flexible,” said Almodovar.
The festival opened with a ceremony led by Italian star Monica Bellucci. “Cinema does not have a gender, a flag, or a border,” she said. The Palme d’Or prize, the 2017 version of which is encrusted with 167 diamonds, will be presented on 28 May.
