EU-Russia ties remain at odds
14 July, 2017
Differences with Russia remain but dialogue will intensify, EU High Representative Federica Mogherini said after her talks with Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Lavrov last Tuesday. Despite differences, the EU will continue to engage with Russia, seek to cooperate wherever possible to promote peace, and to build bridges between people, the EEAS press statement following the meeting noted. The first diplomats of the EU and Russia agreed that the announced agreement on a ceasefire in south-west Syria is a first step towards a broader nation-wide ceasefire and a political solution to the crisis. They reiterated their common engagement and commitment to work on the Middle East Peace Process in the Quartet based on the two-state solution, as well to work for a continued full implementation of the Iran nuclear deal.
Regarding Ukraine, Mogherini told Lavrov that "for the EU, the full implementation of the Minsk Agreements is essential."
